in the barrier that moves, and it is engineered accordingly, not simply installed.
Arizona code (A.R.S. § 36-1681) requires self-closing, self-latching hardware
on pool barriers for a reason: a gate that doesn’t close on its own is a gap,
not a barrier.

Built Around Your Code
State-Mandated, the Same Across Arizona
- Gates swing outward, away from the pool, so a child pushing on it cannot force it open.
- The latch release sits at least 54 inches above the ground on the pool side — or lower, if secured behind a keyed or combination lock.
- Self-closing and self-latching operation is required from any open position, not just when pushed shut.
These are set by state law (A.R.S. § 36-1681) and don’t shift by zip code.
Where Cities Add Their Own Layer?
- Fence height: state law sets a 60-inch (5-foot) minimum, but municipalities can raise it — Chandler requires 6 feet.
- Placement and barriers: setback from the water’s edge, whether a secondary barrier is required, and glazing/permit documentation all vary by local building department.
